The Worries Of Male Hair Loss

Saturday, July 12th, 2008

In short if you are worried about male hair loss, then you have three options.  You can either embrace it, try to hide it or treat it.

Embracing Male Hair Loss Problems

Not everyone thinks that male hair loss is a tragedy, in fact if you look through women’s magazines, some of the sexiest men around today are bald.  Sean Connery, Bruce Willis, Lou Gossett, Jr. or Patrick Stewart regularly get voted as winners of polls on the sexiest male etc.

One of the things you can do about male hair loss is to shave what little hair you have left and go for the chrome dome look.  It’s really quite sexy.

Hiding Male Hair Loss

I’m not being judgmental, and I sure don’t want to hurt anybody’s feelings, but this is the least attractive possible option for dealing with male hair loss.  Bald is sexy; comb-overs are not.

I suppose you could make a case that hiding male hair loss is associated with power.  Look at the awful toupees some of the news anchors wear.  They are pretty powerful men.  Both Julius Caesar and Napoleon Bonaparte wore comb-overs.  I guess some guys would rather be powerful than sexy.

Treating Male Hair Loss

Some men like their hair and don’t want to lose it.  They choose to treat male hair loss.

90% of men who experience hair loss have androgenic alopecia, or male pattern baldness.  It’s caused by a build up of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) around the hair follicles, which kills the follicle and causes hair to fall out.

Male hair loss illustratedDHT is a byproduct of testosterone (which gives credence to the bald guys are sexy theory), but some men have a genetic resistance to the effects of DHT on their hair.

Those guys don’t go bald.  The mother passes on the gene for DHT resistance, so if your mom’s father is bald, you could go bald, too.

Treatments for male hair loss work either to enhance hair growth, or to block DHT.

Minoxidil (Rogaine® is an over-the-counter treatment for hair loss in either men or women.  It works by encouraging hair growth.

You might still lose as much hair as ever, but you should (you hope) grow it back faster.

Propecia is a prescription treatment only for male hair loss.  It works by blocking DHT.  Avodart, a medication used to treat benign prostatic hypertrophy, also blocks DHT, and some doctors prescribe it to treat male hair loss.

Saw palmetto is an herbal treatment that is also thought to block DHT.  It can be purchased at many drug or natural food stores.

Unfortunately, whatever the type of medication you opt for to fight male hair loss there is one problem, if you stop taking it on a regular basis then your hair will start to fall out again.

Looking For Your Hair Loss Solution

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

If you are unfortunate enough to suffer from hair loss is does not matter whether you are a man, women or youngster, it is a painful blow to your ego that has you reaching for a hair loss solution to comfort yourself.

Needing a hair loss solution? Some people do not worry about hair loss and accept it as part of the natural aging process but to some having a full head of hair is vital and there is a large market that has sprung up to provide potential hair loss solutions.

Before you go searching for the nearest hair loss solution however, be warned that the first place you should visit is your doctor’s office.

Why?  Well you may find that your hair loss is as a result of a hormonal imbalance or something that is perhaps easily treatable by your doctor, why waste money on expensive solutions when the cure may be to hand?

What is Hair Loss?

To find a hair loss solution, you should first know why your hair is falling out.

Hair loss is caused by a number of genetic, environmental and hormonal influences. With males, hair loss is most likely genetic, and if they have a family history of balding, most likely young men will begin to see receding hair as early as their young 20s.

For women, hair loss can be caused by hormonal imbalances during pregnancy, or even while they are on birth control. For both genders, hair loss can also occur after surgery, illness or even if you tie your hair too tight.

Solutions

There are a number of ways to slow or stop hair loss. Finding a hair loss solution that will work with your body’s chemistry is something to take into consideration.

For pattern hair loss, medication such as Rogaine and Propecia can work for you. Rogaine is applied directly into the scalp and is supposed to stimulate hair growth.

Propecia is a pill taken by mouth that will block the DHT (dihydrotestosterone) that causes hair loss, thus stopping the process.

Although these are the two most effective and used products, the option of hair transplant is a permanent hair loss solution to be considered. In this procedure, hair is taken from the back of the scalp and placed at the receding line. This way, you will have a full head of hair that will never leave your scalp.

Or if chemical remedies are not your choice then why not take a look at a natural remedy put together by Todd Davis.  His claims of restoring hair growth using ‘Hollywood secrets’ do certainly seem to be working.

Finally, we all have to accept that as we age our bodies change and we will lose hair and see our skin condition change.  You do not have to accept this of course and certainly there are enough hair loss solution products to help you fight the battle.

Some Quirky Hair Loss Remedy Solutions

If you are looking for a hair loss remedy then you have probably heard of Minoxidil by now.

If so. Then please remember that the first solution you should seek is to visit your doctor, not all hair loss is caused by the aging process.  Consequently effective hair loss remedies will vary with the condition you are suffering from.

hair loss remedy starts with blood testYou may find that you are in need of blood tests or even a scalp biopsy to determine which type of hair loss you’re experiencing.

Not every hair loss remedy is effective, though it has been noted that, unless your hair loss is caught very early on, proprietary hair loss remedies usually do not bring long lasting relief of the symptoms.

In fact, people have been trying to come up with a cure for baldness for centuries, and have found some pretty innovative treatments.

None of these treatments have FDA approval, and none have been tested in large-scale studies. In other words, they may or may not work, as stated before, visit your doctor first, this article is not intended as medical advice, merely information only.

Every home spun hair loss remedy is either taken by mouth or rubbed onto the scalp, you need to be certain that you are not allergic to any of the ingredients.

Hair Loss Remedy Preparations Taken by Mouth

Drink a glass of any of these remedies each day:

•    Coriander Leaf (cilantro) juice
•    1 tsp apple cider vinegar in water
•    Smoothie of banana, honey, yogurt and skim milk
•    Juice mixture of any of the following: alfalfa, lettuce, fresh spinach, cilantro

Hair Loss Remedy Preparations to Rub on Your Head

Over the centuries, people have massaged these concoctions into their heads to treat baldness:

•    Mix 1 cup mustard oil with 4 tablespoons of henna leaves
•    Use amla oil, either alone or mixed with coconut milk and/or lime juice
•    Mix equal parts of alcohol, borox and quinine.  (Don’t try this one at home—it could give you a pretty good rash)
•    Rub cow dung onto the bald spot  (not in my house…)
•    Mix a chopped onion and 20 birch leaves in a bottle of alcohol.  (It doesn’t say what kind of alcohol…)
•    Grind a bit of licorice and mix with little saffron in skim milk (Do you know how much saffron costs?  And you want to rub it on your head?)
•    Use coconut milk
•    Or aloe vera juice
•    Mix honey and egg yolk and apply to the scalp
•    Rub the bald spot with an onion until it’s red, then rub honey into it
•    Mix castor oil and almond oil, warm it and rub into scalp
•    Grind black peppercorn with either lemon or lime seeds and rub the paste on thinning spots.
•    Put raw mango pulp in a jar of oil and leave it to age for a year, then rub it on your head
•    Make a paste of hot olive oil, honey and cinnamon

In summary, many people continue searching for a hair loss remedy as it is just simply too distressing to watch your hair fall out daily.

If you do not like any of the above so called ‘cures’ then why not review the work of Todd Davis, his all natural, no chemical hair loss remedy is gaining popularity by the day.
