Preventing Hair Loss - less quirky but still unproven

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

Your hair needs proteins, vitamins and minerals and so plenty of fruits, vegetables and milk should be in your diet.  Foods that are green, leafy vegetables, fresh fruit salads, coconut, lean meat, poultry, fish, eggs, nuts, yogurt, almonds and cottage cheese will all add strength to your growing hair and will add a natural shine.

Common advice is that you should aim to drink around eight glasses of water, herbal teas and unsweetened fruit juice, but personally I find this impossible.

However, it should be easier to drink less regular tea and coffee by substituting say water or herbal teas.  This is because tea and coffee increase the loss of water from your body and important nutrients are washed away with it. Alcoholic beverages can also be a major factor that can get in the way of preventing hair loss.

Also make sure you get plenty of exercise because exercise will promote circulation and other essential requirements for healthy hair.

Some More Quirky Methods For Preventing Hair Loss

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

Here are some more quirky methods for preventing hair loss that we have come across.  As usual be aware that we have no proof these work and do not take any responsilbility for them should you try them, you should consult your doctor before trying these out.

Take two teaspoons of caster oil, two teaspoons of amla and shikakai powder, powdered fenugreek seeds, two teaspoons of neem paste and two eggs, you can apply the paste to your scalp and hair.

This paste will need to be left on for about 45 minutes, and then you can wash it off with a mild shampoo.

If dandruff is part of the problem, you can massage the hair with warm coconut oil and apply the juice of one lemon to the scalp.  Grind about 550 grams of methi seeds, mix in two eggs and apply this on your scalp.

Leave it on for thirty minutes, and shampoo with an anti-dandruff shampoo.  For the final rinse, take warm water and add the juice of one lemon to it.  You should do this twice a week to wash the hair of dandruff.

Scalp diseases from bacterial or fungal infections can lead to hair falling out.  Get medical help for any persistent hair infections and keep your hair clean and dandruff free to the best of your abilities.

Is A Natural Hair Loss Remedy Any Good

Monday, August 18th, 2008

The trouble with using a natural hair loss remedy is that you have no guarantee as to whether they work or not.

Having said that of course you could say that about all hair loss remedies!  The problem is we all have different bodies and what works for one person does not necessarily work for another.

A simple enough natural hair loss remedy to try is to massage your scalp.  The purpose of this is to stimulate blood flow to your hair follicles in the hope that they will see some regeneration.

Start by rubbing the scalp for no longer then couple of minutes a day; you can try doing it with some coconut or palm oil but, if you don’t want to grease your hair, you can just massage the scalp with your fingertips (not nails) with nothing on them.

Of course, if you are feeling more adventurous you can buy one of those electric massagers available in the department stores.

Natural oils like jojoba and palm oil are also known to be great natural hair growth remedy as a pre-shower treatment. All you have to do is massage it gently into the scalp before a shower, leave it in for about 10 – 15 minutes and then wash it out.

Next, try aromatherapy. Mix six drops of lavender and bay essential oil in a base of four ounces of either almond, soy bean or sesame oil; massage the mixture into the scalp and let your scalp soak in it for at least 20 minutes. The scents and herbs have been known to stimulate hair growth.

Items in your kitchen can also be used to whip up a hair rinse. Boil rosemary and sage along with peach leaf, nettle and burdock for the longer then couple of minutes. Clear the water of the herbs and let it cool down after which you can use it to wash your hair. Rosemary and sage have been known to be very effective as a natural hair growth remedy.

Finally, try henna. This is a traditional Indian herb which is used widely by women in India who have or don’t have hair loss problems. It is known to be an effective natural hair growth remedy and conditioner. Keep in mind henna will color your hair slightly red to brick red.

Listed above are just some natural remedies we have come across but if you are interested in using any of them you must do some research online or at a local natural herb store for full explanations of what would be suitable for your individual case.

But do keep in mind that any natural hair growth remedy may well not stimulate your hair growth, as mentioned earlier there are no guarantees.

Dealing With The Menopause and Hair Loss

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

Dealing with menopause and hair loss is quite a challenge. It is a tough realization for a woman that she just hit menopause, in middle age, and to top it off, that she has to deal with hair loss too.

Menopause

Menopause is usually one of the main causes of hair loss in women. Menopause occurs in women from the ages of 30 to 70 years old, with the highest rate between the ages of 40 and 50 years old.

Menopause is a very traumatic stage in a woman’s life; few take it very well, focusing on the bright side of never having to deal with periods again and also not having to worry about getting pregnant any more.

However, the majority take it as a sign of old age and that can be pretty devastating. During such a bad phase, when faced with menopause and hair loss, it can really drive some to depression. Symptoms of menopause are hot flashes and huge mood changes.  Hair loss is not a menopause symptom but just a side effect due to the hormonal changes in the body.

Good News

Hair loss due to menopause can usually be treated successfully. Menopause and hair loss may be connected but depending on the actual cause of the hair loss, a treatment can be usually worked out effectively.

There are a variety of reasons that can cause hair loss when a woman gets into her menopause stage, with associated treatments. Some of them are due to hormonal changes, which can be treated with a hormonal regulation regimen.

Another cause is depression. Along with stress, such a state is common in women with menopause and hair loss due to stress is a well-known factor. Treatment is available for this cause as well with specific drugs and hair tonics.

Finally, when women reach the state of menopause some lose their appetites, while others indulge in overeating. Both will cause unbalanced nutrition for the body, which in turn will cause hair loss.

So in this case, proper nutrition plus any relevant medications should bring your hair right back where it belongs.

Bad News

If the cause is partly hereditary, since hereditary causes of hair loss cannot be treated efficiently, the hair loss might be inevitable.

However, there have been a number of successful cases reported when this type of hair loss was successfully treated.

Having to deal with menopause and hair loss is never easy; however keeping a positive attitude, having your family’s love and support, and knowing that you can do something to improve the situation should get your smile right back on your lips.
