Finding A Hair Loss Drug That Works
Monday, March 3rd, 2008What would you do if you find that your hair is falling out steadily and you are in danger of becoming partially or fully bald?
Chances are that you will follow whatever the major advertisements promote and try out their products in the hope that one of these will stop the hair loss and save you from the predicament.
Unfortunately, it does not work out this way. Very few of the products advertised through the media are really as effective as they promote.
Sometimes, this is not because they are bogus products but because the underlying cause for hair loss requires more than a cosmetic intervention.
There is no wonder hair loss drug today. The treatment for hair loss cannot be done successfully without identifying the underlying causes for the loss.
Finasteride Is the Most Commonly Used Hair Loss Drug
Sometime ago, finasteride, was used for the treatment of enlarged prostrate in men. While treating this disease, it was found that this drug prevents the conversion of five-alpha-reductase into DHT. Since DHT is the main reason for hair loss in men, its blockage meant that hair loss was controlled.
Once this was proved conclusively through medical research studies, finasteride was actively promoted as an effective and efficient hair loss drug for men. Women cannot really use this drug as it produces dangerous side effects for the unborn male fetuses.
Another similarly acting hair loss drug is dutasteride, which also works by inhibiting the production of DHT. This drug too is contraindicated for women as it has dangerous side effects. Both the above drugs were initially used in the treatment for prostate enlargement in men.
For women minodixil has proved to be an efficient hair loss drug. This drug is mostly used on its own, though it is used sometimes in combination with other hair loss treatments for faster and better results. The minodixil not only stops hair loss but also promotes regeneration of hair in women.
Natural Treatment for Hair Loss
Modern science is slowly but steadily acknowledging the power of herbs and nature in the treatment of many diseases. There are now many herbal treatments that are available in the market which help with the problem of hair loss. However, these products are not yet approved by the FDA for many other reasons and hence, the treatment is usually undertaken at own risk.
