Of the various causes of hair loss in a woman that caused by stress is probably the most common.

Did you know that it is not always straight away after the stress causing event either?

Hair loss in a woman can happen three or four months after you have got over the illness or major surgery, and it can result in a large amount of hair being lost.

The hair loss in this case is caused from the stress of the illness and will be temporary; the hair growth will return again. Other causes are not as easy to identify and solve.

    Hormones

Sometimes hormonal problem can cause hair loss in females.  An under or over active thyroid gland can cause hair loss.

Hair loss can also occur if the female and male hormones known as androgens and estrogens are not in balance.  Correcting the hormone imbalance may help you to stop the hair loss.

Hair loss in a woman can occur about three months after you have had a baby.  This is because of the hormone factor, since during pregnancy the hormones help you to keep hair you would normally lose.

When the hormones return to the normal levels of before pregnancy, the hair that wouldn’t fall out, now will fall out, and the normal cycle of hair growth and loss will return.

    Medications

Certain medications can also cause hair loss in a woman.  This type of hair loss will improve when you stop taking the medications causing the problem.  Medicines that can cause hair loss in a woman include blood thinners, medicines used for gout, medicines used in chemotherapy, too much vitamin A, birth control pills and antidepressants.

Sometimes certain infections can also cause hair loss in a woman.  Fungal infections of the scalp can cause hair loss in children as well.  You can treat the infection easily with antifungal medications and promote hair growth to reappear.

    Diseases

Finally you need to be aware that hair loss in a woman can be caused by the symptoms of an underlying disease, such as lupus or diabetes.  In fact, because hair loss will often be an early sign of such a disease, it is essential that you visit your doctor to find the cause so that you obtain the correct treatment, which may not be to treat your hair loss directly at all.

The good news about hair loss in a woman is that many of the problems are treatable or cure themselves in their own time.
