Often, we associate hair loss with age. In fact, this usually isn’t the case at all. Very old people can still have full heads of hair. There are many causes of hair loss, but aging is actually the least common cause of hair loss. It is important that you never associate your own hair loss to aging, as there may be a medical cause, and often, when the cause is determined, you may be able to do something to restore hair growth.

First, we have hereditary baldness or pattern baldness, which is technically called androgenetic alopecia. Pattern baldness can occur in females and males, and the cause of the hair loss is that the length of time in the hair growing process is shortened, resulting in hair that is thinner and weaker, allowing the hair to fall out more easily. This hereditary baldness can be inherited from either side of your family, and the age that your ancestor started losing their hair would be about the age that you would start losing yours as well.

Cicatricial Alopecia is caused by scarring of the hair follicle. This is permanent hair loss, and while some health conditions are known to damage hair follicles in this manner, we know little about all causes of this type of hair loss.

Alopecia Areata is more common than most people realize, and the amount of hair loss will vary from case to case. It is caused by certain health conditions, such as thyroid disease, and alopecia areata is considered to be an autoimmune disease. The good thing about this type of hair loss is that the hair typically grows back on its own, but most people will experience periods of hair loss, followed by periods of hair re-growth throughout their lives.

The condition known as traction alopecia is caused by constant stress and tension on the hair such as that caused by styling the hair or from certain hairstyles. In most cases, the hair will grow back, however if the constant stress continues, the hair follicles can become damaged, which will result in an inability to re-grow the hair.

There are other causes of hair loss as well, such as poor nutrition, using certain medications, specific diseases, other medical treatments, changes in hormones, the use of various hair treatments, or infections. It is important to find out the exact cause of your hair loss before you begin trying to treat the problem.
